Fees and take-home
Gumroad Fees Calculator
Estimate a batch of Gumroad sales: standard Direct is 10% + $0.50 plus payment processing; eligible high-volume sellers pay 5% + $0.50 on subsequent direct sales in the qualifying month. Discover is 30%, including processing. Select only the rate already applicable to the sales you are modeling, not your entire month's hoped-for rate.
Formula
- Direct Gumroad fee per transaction = Sale amount * Selected applicable rate (10% or 5%) + $0.50
- Direct payment processing estimate = Sale amount * Processing rate + Fixed processing fee
- Discover fee per transaction = Sale amount * 30% (processing included)
- At a $0 collected amount, both Gumroad and separate payment processing fees are $0
- Total fees = (Gumroad fee + separate processing estimate, when applicable) * Number of transactions
- Net per transaction = Sale amount - Gumroad fee - separate processing estimate
- Effective fee rate = Total fees / Gross revenue * 100
Examples
- A $29 direct sale has a $3.40 Gumroad fee plus an estimated $1.14 US card processing fee, leaving about $24.46.
- Selling 100 of a $19 product through direct sales produces $1,900 gross, $240 in Gumroad fees, and about $85.10 in estimated US card processing, netting about $1,574.90.
- The same $29 product sold through Discover costs $8.70 in fees per sale (30%) instead of $3.40 from direct.
When to use this calculator
- Decide whether to push customers through your own profile link or rely on Gumroad Discover.
- Estimate what a launch month earns after Gumroad takes its cut.
- Compare Gumroad take-home against Stripe direct, PayPal, or Platform Take-Home Calculator output.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the $0.50 fixed per-transaction fee on direct sales; on a $9 product it adds up quickly.
- Treating the direct 10% + $0.50 Gumroad fee as all-in; direct card or PayPal processing can be a separate cost.
- Assuming Discover is 'free traffic'; Discover takes 30% of the sale, which is much higher than direct sales fees.
- Applying the 5% discount to sales before qualifying, or assuming all fees are either returned or kept on every refund.
Frequently asked questions
What are Gumroad's official pricing fees in 2026?
Standard Direct is 10% + $0.50 plus separate payment processing; eligible subsequent direct sales after reaching $20,000 paid sales in a calendar month use 5% + $0.50. Discover is 30%, including processing. There is no monthly platform fee. The default Direct card-processing estimate is 2.9% + $0.30; use your own payment method's actual fees.
How is the Gumroad fee calculated on a sale?
Standard Direct: multiply the sale amount by 10% and add $0.50, then add processing. A $29 US card example leaves about $24.46. For already-qualified later high-volume Direct sales, select 5% instead; do not reprice earlier sales. A $29 Discover sale costs $8.70 and leaves $20.30 with processing included.
What's the difference between Direct and Discover?
Direct sales come through your own audience or links and use the applicable standard or high-volume Direct rate, plus processing. Discover sales come through Gumroad's marketplace and use 30% with processing included. Selecting the 5% Direct tier does not change Discover fees.
Do I get the Gumroad fee back on refunds?
For ordinary Gumroad payments, Gumroad's own fee is returned on the refunded portion, including proportional credits on partial refunds; payment processing is retained. Stripe Connect and PayPal Connect are exceptions: sellers remain responsible for both Gumroad and processor fees. Enter only retained fees in Refund Impact, or actual fee credits in Monthly Pocket Check. Use the refund receipt, not a blanket assumption.
When can I use the 5% high-volume Direct rate?
After paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month, subsequent eligible direct sales that month use 5% + $0.50. Earlier sales are not repriced. Qualification resets next month, and refunds that lower paid sales below the threshold can restore 10% for later sales. Custom account fees take precedence. Model pre-qualification and post-qualification sales separately; this calculator does not infer your qualification from batch revenue.
Is the $0.50 fixed fee on every sale?
The $0.50 per-transaction fixed fee applies to direct sales only, per Gumroad's published rate. Discover sales are listed at 30% without a stated fixed fee component, though Gumroad reserves the right to change this. The fixed fee disproportionately hurts low-priced products: on a $5 sale the $0.50 is 10% by itself, on top of the 10% rate.
Does Gumroad handle sales tax or VAT?
Gumroad handles sales tax collection and remittance as Merchant of Record for supported sales. This calculator includes platform fees and an editable processing estimate, but does not calculate tax or VAT. Use the correct fee base and your payout reports for your situation.
Is What I Pocket affiliated with Gumroad?
No. What I Pocket is an independent calculator site and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Gumroad. The rates used here come from Gumroad's official pricing page and fee help article, and each is re-verified on the date shown under Rates checked. For a full walkthrough of the math, see the Gumroad fees guide on this site.
Is Gumroad cheaper than Lemon Squeezy?
At standard rates, a $29 Gumroad Direct sale has $3.40 in platform fees before processing, versus Lemon Squeezy's $1.95 bundled base fee. Eligible high-volume Gumroad sales have a lower platform rate, but processing is still separate. Compare your actual account rates, add-ons, tax handling and payout workflow, not just the headline percentage.
Can I avoid the 30% Discover fee?
Direct sales use the applicable Direct rate rather than Discover's 30%. The standard Direct rate is 10% + $0.50, or 5% + $0.50 for eligible subsequent high-volume sales, plus processing. Verify the actual attribution on your sale receipt.

Sources and assumptions
- Gumroad direct or profile sales: 10% + $0.50 per transaction according to Gumroad's official pricing page. Customers reach you through your own profile, link, or marketing.
- After paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month, subsequent direct sales that month qualify for 5% + $0.50. This is not retroactive. Qualification resets on the first of the next month; refunds that take paid sales below the threshold can restore 10% on later sales. Account-specific custom fees take precedence. Split mixed-rate months into separate batches and reconcile with your payout export.
- Direct sales can also incur separate credit card or PayPal processing. The editable defaults use Gumroad's published US card example of 2.9% + $0.30.
- Gumroad Discover marketplace sales: 30% per transaction, including processing. Gumroad's marketplace surfaces your product to a new customer who buys through Discover.
- Gumroad lists no monthly platform fee on the official pricing page.
- Free product sales have no Gumroad fee. At a $0 collected amount, separate payment processing is also estimated as zero. This is different from refunding an originally paid sale; a zero-revenue fee percentage is N/A.
- Ordinary Gumroad refunds return Gumroad's own fee on the refunded portion; underlying payment processing is not returned. Stripe Connect and PayPal Connect are exceptions: the seller remains responsible for Gumroad and processing fees. This sales estimate does not subtract refunds; use your actual fee credits in Monthly Pocket Check.
- Processing rates vary by country and payment method. Edit the Direct processing fields to match your Gumroad payout reports; they are ignored in Discover mode.
